Die Zahnfee

On August 22 — the night Germany officially celebrates her — the Zahnfee tucks a single gold coin inside a tiny wooden box on a child's bedside table. "Eine schöne kleine Perle," she whispers, lifting the milk tooth like a pearl from a clam. She has been doing this since 1980, and somewhere in Berlin, a museum is quietly collecting every box she has ever filled.
