Charcoal West, Tooth East
The Bemba Child
A Bemba boy in Lusaka holds two things in two hands: a piece of charcoal in his right, his lost tooth in his left. He turns to the west and throws the charcoal toward the setting sun. He turns to the east and throws the tooth toward where dawn will come. "As the charcoal sinks with the sun, a new tooth will rise with the dawn." He has been told this since he could walk.
