The Spirit on the Roof

In a wooden house in Chiang Mai, a boy pulls a wobbly bottom tooth and his mother nods toward the roof. "There is a spirit up there," she says. "Toss it high. Ask for one that grows in fast." He throws — and catches the eye of something he cannot see — and somewhere above the wooden tiles, a quiet hand catches what he cannot.
