Donkey for a Gazelle
Shams the Sun
In Cairo, a boy wraps his tooth in tissue, climbs to the rooftop, and shouts into the morning sun: "Ya Shams, ya Shams — take this donkey's tooth and give me a gazelle's tooth!" The Sun, who has been doing this for thirteen centuries and counting, takes the trade. By the time the boy comes down for breakfast, the new tooth is already on its way in — fast and light, the way a gazelle moves.
