Roof and Bed
The Grandmother
In a stilt house outside Phnom Penh, a grandmother takes her grandson's lower tooth and tosses it onto the thatch above. The upper one she places gently under his sleeping mat. "The roof remembers," she says. "The earth remembers. The new tooth will remember which way to grow." He believes her. He has no reason not to.
