The River Throw
The River
On the bank of an Auckland river, a Māori grandfather hands his moko a small white tooth. "Awa," he says — the river. "She will hold it for you." The boy throws. The tooth disappears with a soft plip. The grandfather smiles. Nothing has been lost. Everything has been given back to the water that gives back, eventually, to all of us.
