The Roof Rat

In Port-au-Prince, a girl steps onto the porch and throws her tooth high onto the tin roof above her head. "Take my old tooth, give me a good one!" she calls. The rat — who lives somewhere up there with all the teeth Haiti has ever lost — hears her. He always hears. He never replies. He just gets to work.
