Brazil
The Bird Inspector
O Pássaro
In a Rio backyard, a boy holds his tooth up to the sky and his mother gives him the warning every Brazilian child knows: "If the tooth is dirty, the bird will not take it." He scrubs it once with his shirt. He throws it high into the laundry-line air. A small bird drops down, inspects it, judges it, and accepts. Brazil's birds have standards.
