The Pandanus Plant
The Mother
In an Aboriginal community near Darwin, a mother takes her child's lost tooth and slips it gently into the new shoot of a pandanus plant — the same plant whose leaves clean teeth and whose roots ease toothaches. The plant takes the tooth in. The tooth becomes part of the plant. The child grows. The plant grows. Some traditions don't need a fairy at all.
